An old one

Just found this old scan from Iballa, in it's simplicity, still is one of my favorite windsurfing pictures, I think it really captures that sensation of fun & fly.

Dario & the table top

Dario Ojeda is one of the few still doing table tops, I mean, propper ones, and this morning in Pozo Izquierdo I enjoyed one of them just in front of my camera.
The picture is not great but I can tell you the jump was amazing, the thing with table tops for the pictures from the water is that they look better a little bit more sideways instead of from a stright front angle.
The forecast is looking good (but some calima is expected) so let's see what we can do in the next days.

Pictures

Here you have a few pictures from the last two or three weeks in Gran Canaria and as the Gran Canaria Wind & Waves Festival is about to start and nearly everybody will be on 2013 gear, I guess is no problem if I already publish some pictures with the new equipment.

Josep Pons

Josep Pons is one of those guys who not only can do all the repertoire, but he can do it just in front of me (the photographer) when I'm shooting from the water, which it may look easy, but it's not, nearly everybody can do backloops and forwards here in Pozo Izquierdo, but just a few can do them at his will, here and now, just in front of the photographer.

For a while now, I realized that every time I was shooting and Josep was there, no matter how the conditions were, I ended up having some good action shots.

By the way, today is his birthday.

Per molts anys Josep!!!

Forward loop

I rememer when I first started to get hooked on windsurfing (in the mid 80's), watching all those magazines and videos from Hawaii, with Mike Waltze, Dough Hunt, Dave Kalama and just a few more, doing the first loops in the big waves of Hookipa, which was supposed to be the only place in the world where conditions allowed this kind of jumps, but now, technique and equipment have evolved a lot and we can see loops as soon as the wind allows us to go in the footstraps no matter how the waves are.

On fire !!!!

Fanatic windsurfing 2013
The boards Victor is using in Gran Canaria look soo good, yesterday during a forward loop coming in, really close to the shore, I had the perfect chance to take a picture of the board, but suddently the tail of the board went on fire !!!!
I guess that means I still can't show you the last prototypes from Sebastian Wenzel.

Pozo Izquierdo from the water

We had a few fun days last week at Pozo Izquierdo and I had a couple of nice sessions taking pictures from the water, this day in particular was a little bit crowded, so I could take a lot of pictures but I also missed some nice shots, I was specially unlucky with Omar Sanchez, who was one of the infrom windsurfers of the session, but beacuse of drops or focus issues, I missed a couple of really good jumps just in front of me.

On the other hand I shooted a really nice sequence from Eleazar Alonso, you can see the sequence here.

And of course, if you want to see more of my windsurfing pictures, you can visit my website: www.danimiquel.com

Backloop by Josep Pons

It's a pity that I missed the take off of this backloop, would have been an amazing sequence if I've had it from the start; somebody did a jump on the wave before and when I turned around Pons was already flying un in the sky.

Drops

Aleix Sanllehy windsurf
Action sports photography is not an easy job, you not only have to control the elements of a regular photo, but you have to do it fast, in fact it's no chance to go fast, you have to take decisions before the action happens (when you see it, it's too late to shoot), but if you try to do that while you're swiming in the ocean, with strong wind and waves, then you have a feew extra difficulties; if it's not enough to keep in focus and in a good frame somebody moving fast, try to do it while swiming, but that's not all, then you have the drops, AAAGHHH, THE DROPS!!!.
Fortunately, in this photo, the drops are not on the subject, so the picture could be acceptable, but for some reason (Murphy's law, I guess), drops tend to be just in the middle of the subject most of the times, from this same session I had to discard a couple of good shots because of that.
